What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. "Similar technologies" include browser storage such as localStorage, which works like a cookie but stays entirely on your device. This policy covers both.

Consent — Off by Default

Non-essential cookies (analytics and advertising) are not set unless you accept them. When you first visit, a consent banner lets you choose Accept All or Reject Non-Essential. You can change your choice at any time via "Cookie Settings" in the footer. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we automatically treat new visits as a rejection of non-essential cookies. You can also block cookies in your browser settings, though this may affect how this and other websites work.

Essential — Always Active

These are strictly necessary for the site to function and remember your privacy choice. Under UK and EU law they do not require consent, and they never leave your device.

• Cookie consent preference (cookie-consent) — Remembers whether you accepted or rejected non-essential cookies, so you are not asked on every visit. Stored in your browser's localStorage.

• Dev Essentials checklist progress (fh-essentials-progress) — Remembers which checklist items you have ticked on the Dev Essentials page. Stored in your browser's localStorage; we cannot see it, and the Reset button on that page clears it.

Analytics — Only With Your Consent

• Google Analytics 4 (_ga, _ga_*) — Helps us understand how visitors use the site: pages viewed, time on site, traffic sources and approximate location. These cookies are set only after you accept non-essential cookies, and typically expire up to 2 years after your last visit (or sooner if you clear them). You can also opt out via the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

• Microsoft Clarity (_clck, _clsk, CLARITY, SM) — Used to record user session interactions (clicks, scrolls, typing) and compile heatmaps to analyze site usability. These cookies are only set after you accept non-essential cookies. For more details on how Microsoft uses cookies, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Advertising — Only With Your Consent

• Google AdSense (including the DoubleClick DART cookie, __gads, __gpi and similar) — Used to serve and measure advertisements, and to limit how often you see the same ad. Where required by law, these are set only after you accept non-essential cookies. Under some US state laws, advertising cookies count as "sharing" of personal information — rejecting non-essential cookies opts you out. You can also manage personalised ads via Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info.
